Review of Deadly Kisses

8 Jun 2013
Deadly Kisses

Synopsis

Aiden Grant has a killer kiss. Literally. And it’s not every reaper who gets to work with the Sixteenth President. Sure, Honest Abe likes to throw out history lessons with reaping assignments, but when you’re favored by the ancients, grim reaper life is pretty sweet for a newly dead seventeen-year-old.

Then things get messy.

Aiden is assigned to reap the soul of Bee, the only girl he has ever loved. When Aiden’s kiss of death fails, intertwining their souls, she is still very much alive and they are both in trouble. The ancients want Bee, who has special powers of her own, and they’ll do anything to get her.

Some rules are meant to be broken, even if that means Aiden must bargain with his own soul to save Bee. Who knew the afterlife could get so complicated?

Review

Deadly Kisses sounded like it would be great but unfortunately it did not live up to my expectations. It had such great potential; the main character is a reaper who fails to properly collect the soul of a girl he loved whilst alive which then puts both of their lives in danger. The idea behind the book was great but the execution left much to be desired.
I was expecting a darkly humorous story (after all Aiden’s boss is a former American president) with some excitement, mystery and a little romance. Instead I found it to be (and I hate saying this) boring. It tried to be funny but It didn’t succeed in making me laugh.
My main issue with this book was its ability to draw you in. Usually I get really emotionally involved in books, but this? Nada. Absolutely nothing. The characters didn’t make me care for them and the authors writing didn’t get me interested in what they were going through.
After fighting to make myself continue reading I gave up half way through. Right in the middle of a big “action” moment I stopped reading. This testifies to how little I connected with the book as usually I can’t stop reading for even a second during action scenes let alone put the book down and never continue reading.
Now quite some time later I still don’t know what happened to Aiden and Bee and if they did manage to escape the ancients but to be brutally honest I don’t care. I may at some point give this book another shot but I have no immediate plans to.
Hopefully other people will enjoy this book more than I did. After all it does mainly seem to have positive reviews but this book just didn’t do it for me.
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review as part of a blog tour a few months ago, this has not affected my opinions or rating in any way*
